GLI ARCANI DI FAUL

La prima città in Italia in cui entrano le carte dei Tarocchi è Viterbo.
Lo storico Giovanni Coveluzzo afferma: “fu regato in Viterbo il gioco delle carte, che in saracino parlare si chiama Nayb”. Stando alle note furono i soldati che tornavano dalle Crociate a condurre con se tali carte; ciò risulta degno di attenzione per due considerazioni: l’ultima crociata finì intorno al 1291 e le carte a Viterbo arrivano direttamente da un paese islamico.
I Tarocchi sono semplici, chiari, quasi scarni. Non disperdono l’attenzione, anzi vogliono rafforzarla, invitano alla concentrazione, non all’annullamento. C’è una analogia fra le parole ed i Tarocchi, tra il significato comune delle parole e quello delle carte. Il fatto che i Tarocchi siano stati paragonati ad un libro muto “Mutus Liber” è significativo: siamo noi che dobbiamo riuscire a dialogare mediante la lingua propria dei muti. La memoria viene rafforzata proprio con il suscitare emozioni mediante immagini che colpiscono per la loro intensità.
È questa l’importanza dell’analisi “dei gesti”, dei segni che le carte stesse vogliono comunicarci.
Dice opportunamente San Tommaso d’Aquino: “nelle scienze sacre non solo le parole, ma le cose stesse significano altre cose”. Anche Alberto Magno si interessò a questa arte soprattutto con intenti morali. È però con Giordano Bruno che l’arte della memoria diviene un oggetto ermetico.
Ed è lui che termina quel processo evolutivo che ha trasformato il tarocco da “gioco a filosofia”.
Il lungo processo evolutivo trova pertanto il suo giusto compimento.
L’iconografia di ogni singola carta è stata rispettata per non alterarne la simbologia. La sfida è stata quella di inserire personaggi e situazioni che hanno fatto la storia di Viterbo e della Tuscia e che calzassero perfettamente con il significato secolare che appartiene ad ogni arcano maggiore.
Nella parte inferiore delle carte troviamo in numero e il nome della stessa che ne sottolinea la storicità, mentre nella parte superiore è stato inserito il significato personale e quindi il riferimento con figure ed eventi legati alla Tuscia.
In questa realizzazione per ogni Arcano sono indicati: nome, descrizione, simbolismo, significati generali che sono propri dei Tarocchi. L’abbinamento personale è un riferimento a personaggi che hanno caratterizzato la storia della città di Viterbo e del suo territorio.


The first city in Italy to welcome the Tarot cards is Viterbo. The historian Giovanni Coveluzzo states: “the game of cards, which in the Saracen dialect is called Nayb, was brought to Viterbo”. According to the records it was the soldiers who returned from the Crusades who brought these cards with them. This is worthy of attention for two reasons: the last crusade ended around 1291 and the cards arrived in Viterbo directly from an Islamic country.
The tarot cards are simple, clear and almost bare. They do not disperse attention, but rather intend to capture it, they encourage concentration, not annulment. There is an analogy between words and tarot cards, between the common meaning of words and that of the cards. The fact that the tarot cards have been compared to the silent book “Mutus Liber” is significant: we are the ones who must be able to communicate in the silent language.
Memory is strengthened precisely by arousing emotions through images that are intensely striking. This is the importance of the analysis “of gestures”, of the signs that the cards want to communicate to us. St. Thomas Aquinas appropriately says: “in the sacred sciences not only words, but things themselves, mean other things”. Also Albertus Magnus took an interest in this art above all with moral intent. But it is with Giordano Bruno that the art of memory becomes a hermetic object, and he is also the one who ends that evolutionary process that transformed tarots from “game to philosophy”. The long evolutionary
process therefore finds its right fulfilment. The iconography of each individual card has been respected in order to avoid altering its symbolism. The challenge was to insert characters and situations that were part of the history of Viterbo and the Tuscia province, and that fit perfectly with the secular meaning of every major arcanum. In the lower part of the cards we find both number and name, which emphasise its historicity, while the top part is occupied by the personal meaning and therefore the reference to figures and relevant events of the Tuscia area. In this project each arcanum is indicated by: name, description, symbolism, general meanings that are represented by the Tarot. The personal association is a reference to characters that have played an important role in the history of Viterbo and its territory.
